A Guide to Overcoming Excessive Waswasa and Establishing Tranquility in Your ibadah

Waswasa are وساوس (whispers, doubts, or intrusive thoughts) are instilled by Shaytaan (Satan) into the hearts of believers to create doubt, confusion and anxiety. It can lead to excessive repetition of ibadah (worship) such as wudu (ritual washing) and salah (prayer).

We must do our best to the trap of waswasa. While it is important to take care to ensure that our ibadah is performed correctly, if you find yourself constantly repeating wudu or salah due to وساوس, here are a few tips to help you overcome them:

  • Seek knowledge: The first step is to understand what waswasa is and how it works. By learning about the nature of وساوس, you will be better equipped to identify them and resist their influence.
  • Seek help from a scholar: If you are struggling to overcome waswasa on your own, it is important to seek help from a qualified scholar or imam. They can provide you with guidance and support, and help you to develop a plan to overcome your وساوس.
  • Focus on your intention: When performing ibadah, focus on your intention and make sure that you are doing it for the sake of Allah (swt) alone. This will help to crowd out the وساوس and keep your mind focused on what is important.
  • Don’t let وساوس stop you from ibadah: If you start to experience وساوس while performing ibadah, don’t let them stop you. Simply continue with your ibadah and make dua (supplication) to Allah (swt) for protection from وساوس.
  • Make dua: One of the most effective ways to combat وساوس is to make dua to Allah (swt) for protection. There are many duas that you can recite, but one of the simplest and most effective is:

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق

“A`udhu bi kalimat-Allah il-tamaati min sharri ma khalaq”

(I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created)

  • Remember Allah (swt) is with you: وساوس may be a nuisance, but they are ultimately harmless. Remember that Allah (swt) is with you and He will not burden you with more than you can bear. Trust in Allah (swt) and seek His help, and He will guide you through this challenge.

By following these tips, you can overcome excessive waswasa and establish tranquility in your ibadah. Remember, you are not alone in this struggle, and there is help available. With the help of Allah (swt), you can defeat the وساوس and find peace in your ibadah.
